Where to Start…Your Wellness Journey

When You Don’t Know Where to Start

If you’ve ever thought, “I know I want to feel better, but I have no idea where to begin,” you’re not alone.

Starting anything can feel overwhelming, especially within the wellness space, ESPECIALLY when social media makes it seem like you need to overhaul your entire life overnight, only wear the newest brand names, eat only carrots and hummus, have the new trending electrolyte drink, be up at 5am, get 30,000 steps, have a skin care routine, only buy organic… blah, blah, BLAH!

The truth? You don’t need a perfect plan. You just need a starting point.
One simple entry point that starts you in the right direction.

  • Want to run a 5 K? Get up and stretch for 5 minutes every morning to make tying your shoes easier.

  • Have a weight loss goal? Note foods that you may just eat out of boredom vs real hunger.

  • Increase sleep quality? Take a look at what you're doing the hours leading up to bed on the nights you can’t sleep.

You get what I mean.
Start Small. Reach your larger goals.

So, if you are feeling you are stuck in the revolving door of not knowing where to begin, keep reading to learn a few super helpful tips on getting started on your wellness goals when you just don’t know where to start.

Start With How You Want to Feel
(Not What You Think You Should Do)

Before jumping into meal plans, workouts, or routines, pause and ask yourself a simple question:
How do I want to feel in my body and daily life?

More energy? Less stressed? Stronger? More calm? Better digestion? Sleeping through the night?

Habits stick when you relate them to how you want to feel long term, not what you think you should be doing.
Let that feeling guide your choices.

Your Action Item:
Write down your end goal and how you would feel once you get there.
Then work backwards. Go to the VERY beginning and see if you can find the simplest spot to start and still feel the same.

Choose One Area to Focus On First

One of the biggest reasons people feel stuck, and often stop completely, is that they try to change EVERYTHING at once.
Instead, pick one area that feels most supportive right now to get you simply just moving in the direction of your end goal.

Ask yourself:

  • What feels the most out of balance?

  • What change would give me the biggest relief or boost?

There’s no wrong place to start. Starting anywhere is better than staying frozen.

Make It Small Enough That It Feels Almost Too Easy

If your first step feels intimidating, it’s probably too big.

Wellness is built through small, repeatable actions, not motivation or perfection.
Think in terms of daily basics, not drastic changes.

Examples:

  • Adding one nourishing meal a day.

  • Moving your body for 10–15 minutes instead of committing to the gym every day

  • Going to bed 15 minutes earlier

  • Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning

Consistency beats intensity EVERY.TIME.

Focus on Adding Before You Focus on Removing

A gentle and supportive way to begin is by asking: What can I add that supports me?

When you focus only on restriction or “cutting things out,” wellness can quickly feel punishing.
Adding supportive habits creates momentum and trust with your body.

Start by:

  • Adding more whole foods

  • Adding daily movement that feels good

  • Adding moments of rest or breathing

  • Adding protein, fibre, or hydration

As your body feels more supported, many habits naturally shift without force.

If you’re waiting for the “right time” or the perfect plan, let this be your reminder:
Starting messy is better than not starting at all.

Choose one small step. Do it consistently. Build from there.

Your wellness journey doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s; it just needs to support you.
