Enjoying Summer AND Wellness
Summer is meant to be enjoyed.
The longer days, warm evenings, BBQs, patio dinners, weekend adventures, time with family and friends, vacations, road trips, farmers' markets, ice cream runs and all of those little moments that make summer feel like summer.
But sometimes, when we think about wellness, we can feel like we have to choose between enjoying life and taking care of ourselves.
I don't believe that's true.
In fact, I think summer is a beautiful reminder that wellness doesn't have to be complicated, restrictive or all-or-nothing.
Wellness should fit into your life.
It should give you the freedom to enjoy a meal with friends without guilt, move your body because it feels good, take a slower day when you need one, drink some water when you're out in the sun and spend time with people who make you feel like yourself.
That is what everyday wellness means.
It's not about doing everything perfectly. It's about the small choices we make consistently that help us feel supported, energized and connected to ourselves and the life we're living.
You Don't Have to Be "On Track" All Summer
I hear so many people talk about being "on track" or "off track" with their wellness.
Maybe they eat differently on vacation. Maybe they miss a few workouts. Maybe they have more social events than usual. Maybe they enjoy more desserts or drinks.
And suddenly, they feel like they've messed everything up.
But your wellness isn't something you fall off of because you enjoyed your weekend.
One meal doesn't define your nutrition.
One missed workout doesn't define your activity level.
One late night doesn't undo your sleep habits.
And one vacation doesn't erase the healthy habits you've built.
Your health is influenced by the bigger picture.
So instead of thinking about being "on track," I like to think about what we can return to.
You can return to nourishing meals.
You can return to regular movement.
You can return to drinking more water.
You can return to getting enough rest.
You can return to routines that make you feel good.
There is always another opportunity to make a supportive choice.
Finding Balance With Food
Food is such an important part of summer, and I don't think we should take the enjoyment out of it.
There is something special about eating outside on a warm evening, sharing a meal with friends or enjoying your favourite summer treat.
Nutrition isn't only about nutrients. Food can also be connection, celebration, tradition and pleasure.
Balanced nutrition means making room for all of those things while also giving your body the nourishment it needs.
Maybe most of your meals include a good source of protein, colourful fruits and vegetables, fibre-rich carbohydrates and healthy fats. Maybe you keep some easy, nourishing foods available for busy days. Maybe you make sure you're eating regularly so you aren't going into every social event feeling completely depleted and ravenous.
And then, when you want the burger, the fries, the ice cream or the dessert?
Enjoy it.
You don't need to earn it.
You don't need to compensate for it.
You don't need to "start over" the next morning.
You simply continue.
This is where I think the idea of balance becomes so important. We don't need to eat perfectly to nourish ourselves well. We need to create an overall pattern that supports our bodies while still allowing food to be something we enjoy.
Let Summer Bring More Movement Into Your Day
Summer also gives us so many opportunities to move without making exercise feel like another obligation.
Maybe you go for a morning walk before the day gets too hot. Maybe you spend an afternoon swimming, hiking or biking. Maybe you garden, play outside with your kids or walk around the farmers' market.
Maybe you still enjoy your regular strength training or fitness classes.
And maybe some days, your movement is simply taking a walk after dinner.
It all matters.
I love structured exercise, but I also believe that movement should be about more than burning calories or changing your body.
Movement can help us feel stronger. It can support our mobility, energy and mood. It can give us time outside and help us reconnect with our bodies.
Instead of constantly asking yourself, "What workout should I be doing?", try asking:
"What kind of movement would feel good today?"
Some days you may want to challenge yourself.
Other days you may need something gentle.
Both can be part of a healthy relationship with movement.
Don't Forget That Rest Is Wellness Too
This one can be easy to overlook during summer.
We want to make the most of every beautiful day, so our calendars can quickly become full.
Trips, BBQs, events, family activities, work, social plans and all of the other things that seem to happen at once.
But you don't have to make every day productive.
You don't have to say yes to every invitation.
You don't have to fill every evening.
Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is slow down.
Sit outside with your coffee.
Read a book.
Take a nap.
Have a quiet evening at home.
Go to bed early.
Spend some time without your phone.
Rest isn't something you need to earn after you've been "good."
Rest is part of wellness.
Your body needs recovery, and your mind needs space to simply be..
You Can Enjoy Your Summer AND Support Your Wellness
I want you to know that you don't have to choose.
You can enjoy the patio dinner and still care about your nutrition.
You can have ice cream and still move your body.
You can have a busy weekend and prioritize rest afterward.
You can go on vacation without feeling like you need to "undo" everything when you get home.
You can enjoy a glass of wine with friends.
All of these things can exist within a healthy, balanced life.
That's the beauty of everyday wellness.
It's not about creating a perfect lifestyle.
It's about creating a lifestyle that is realistic, sustainable and enjoyable.
